Course Details

Energy Efficiency in the Southeast - Policies and Programs

Presented by:

Ben Taube:
Prior to becoming the Executive Director of the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance, Ben served as the Public Affairs Manager for the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute where he was responsible for planning, coordinating, and communicating GREENGUARD's activities, capabilities, goals, and priorities to a variety of audiences. Ben also worked as the Director of Government Affairs for EcoSMART Technologies. Prior to EcoSMART, Ben served as the Environmental Manager for the City of Atlanta with the responsibilities of developing and enhancing environmental initiatives and policy. Programs included a green building policy development task force, energy management and conservation program, an urban heat island mitigation pilot project, and many other water quality projects. In addition, he led the Bureau of Stormwater Management with the goal of producing a comprehensive stormwater management program and utility.

Ben is Vice Chair of the Atlanta Chapter of the USGBC; Board member of the USGBC Greenbuild Program Committee; and on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Conservation Voters.

Mr. Taube has a Bachelors Degree from the University of Memphis and a Masters in Environmental Policy and Management from the University of Denver.

Marilyn A. Brown:
Marilyn A. Brown joined Georgia Tech in 2006 after a distinguished career at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory. At ORNL, she held various leadership positions and led several major energy technology and policy scenario studies. Recognizing her stature as a national leader in the analysis and interpretation of energy futures in the United States, Dr. Brown remains affiliated with ORNL as a Visiting Distinguished Scientist. She received her BA in Political Science from Rutgers University (1971), her MRP in Resource Planning from the University of Massachusetts (1973), and her PhD in Geography from The Ohio State University (1977). She also received her CEM (Certified Energy Manager) from the Association of Energy Engineers.

David has been involved in the cleaning industry for almost 30 years, working in virtually every facet of the business. He was the VP of a regional cleaning contractor, Director of Sales & Marketing for S.C. Johnson Professional, and Director of Marketing for Multi-Clean. He is now the President of Don’t Panic Productions, Inc., a new media development company that produces training and marketing materials for companies and organizations in the cleaning industry.

David is the coauthor of the book Green Cleaning for Dummies published by Wiley Publishing, Inc., and Green Sales Tips, published by The Green Cleaning University Press. He is the founder of Green Cleaning University (www.greencleaninguniversity.org.) He is also a member of The Ashkin Group, a consulting firm dedicated to Greening the cleaning industry. As a member of The Ashkin Group, David works with companies and organizations at every facet of the industry, from manufacturers and distributors, BSCs and end-users, to government and non-profit advocacy groups. The Ashkin Group’s efforts range from education, to program development and implementation. A frequent speaker at conferences in the United States as well as internationally, David devotes the majority of his time to green cleaning issues.

Conserving Water Right Where You Are
Ways to reduce water use all over your building

Presented by:

Terry Janssen, President Ecotech Water, Inc.
Terry Janssen is a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Green Building Coalition and State Co-chair of the FGBC Government Green Standards Committee. He is also active with the United States Green Building Council and a current candidate for the USGBC National Board of Directors. Mr. Janssen has been instrumental in working with the Florida League of Mayors and Florida League of Cities who recently passed resolutions by unanimous vote to adopt the “Green Cities Action Accord” resolutions. The resolution encourages all Cities in Florida to adopt the FGBC Green Cities Government Standard. He is also working with the National League of Cities who will be introducing the “Green Cities Action Accord” resolution at their annual conference in New Orleans in mid November. If passed the resolution will encourage all Cities in the United States to adopt Green Cities Government Standards.

Mr. Janssen’s background as the head of a water conservation products manufacturing company as well as his extensive experience in construction and alternative energy enables him to cover a broad spectrum of environmental concerns and what everyone can do to help.

Mr. Janssen holds several patents on products developed to focus on conservation and cutting emissions. Many of the products developed by Janssen and manufactured by Ecotech Water are very unique, and in many cases the only products like them available anywhere. Most of the products operate with the concept that you can get better performance by adding air instead of more water. Mr. Janssen’s designs and related products enable many commercial buildings to function with zero water consumption.

Mr. Janssen also developed many products and designs in alternative energy as well as building construction. Some of the highlights of these endeavors include developing and patenting a product to extract energy from city water mains to use with geothermal heating and cooling and recycled water mains for swimming pool heating. During his building construction, days several unique construction designs were developed including a process to build a home from the ground up in 5 days.

Mr. Janssen has spoken at many industry related functions and conventions as well as making numerous appearances on Television and Radio Talk Shows. Mr. Janssen has also authored many articles, documentaries and is the author of two published books.

Susan is a LEED Accredited Professional and is currently performing LEED Administration for 4 new fire stations and the new Public Safety Headquarters Annex for the City of Atlanta. As the commercial team's liaison to the City, she assists in green policy development. She is also Project Manager for the Federal Energy Management Program grant for Greening Federal Facilities in the Southeast, the Atlanta Green Roofs Initiative and “greening” of Southface's annual Greenprints Conference. She holds a Master’s in Strategic Leadership Toward Sustainability from Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona, Sweden.

James Devlin, (unconfirmed) AIA, LEED AP, Senior Associate, TVS Architects
Since joining TVS & Associates in 1999, Jim has worked on a variety of projects which include collegiate buildings, government buildings and convention and conference centers. He was the project architect for the LEED Silver Certified College of Management Building at Georgia Tech. He has been the Co-Chair of the AIA Atlanta: Committee on the Environment for the past 3 years. He is also a member of the Southface Energy Institute, Georgia Organics, Schoal Creek Watershed Alliance and the U.S. Green Building Council. Jim received his BArch. from California State Polytechnic, Pomona and his MArch. from UCLA. Before coming to Atlanta, he practiced architecture in California, Italy and Australia.

Scott Lee, EarthCraft Multifamily Program Manager, Southface
Scott has been at Southface for approximately 3 years and is presently working with the EarthCraft Multifamily and EarthCraft Communities Program, which are Green Building Certification Programs, and has gained experience with developers of affordable housing through these programs. Scott has also been involved with activities aiding in the expansion of the EarthCraft House program regionally. He attended the University of Georgia at Athens and San Jose State University where he majored in Resource Economics and Environmental Studies respectively.

Green Roofs ~ an Effective Solution to Energy Conservation and Energy Savings

Bill was the designer, project manager and construction superintendent for Atlanta City Hall’s Greenroof project. Completed in 2003, it is credited for being the first governmental greenroof pioneered in the Southeast. As a registered Landscape Architect since 1985, Mr. Brigham has completed numerous successful projects. Downtown Revitalizations, City Park Master Plans, Stream bank stabilization projects and Xeriscape gardens.

Dan Loudermilk, P2AD
Dan Loudermilk joined the P2AD as a Pollution Prevention Engineer in the Technical Assistance Program in October of 2006. He has more than 25 years of Engineering and Environmental experience in a variety of industrial and commercial facilities including petroleum exploration and transportation, kaolin mining and processing, poultry processing, textile manufacturing, aircraft maintenance, steel casting and manufacturing, and fueling facilities.

John Russell has spent the last 38 years holding positions in sales, sales management, national accounts, and marketing. His various positions have helped him understand the complete selling process.

John has worked for nationally recognized manufacturers including Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer Drugs (healthcare), The Gillette Company (retail), and The Dial Corporation (away from home markets); Family owned companies like Nice-Pak Products (healthcare) and Huntington Laboratories (chemical industry). John has also worked for distribution companies like American Hotel Register (lodging) and Medline (healthcare).

Understanding sales from the prospective of the manufacturer as well as the distributor; and from a sales prospective as well as a marketing point of view allows John to be a better sales person and trainer of sales people.

As a manager John’s strengths are motivation and developing his staff. John has also conducted Sustainability and Green Cleaning seminars for schools and universities, architectural firms, property managers, health care institutions, hotels, and contract cleaners.
